Barbershop

I am a “Barbershopper.”

That is totally foreign to many of you, but a select few understand the insanity and fanaticism that goes along with that descriptor.   I started singing barbershop when I was 16.  It is described as a hobby, but really is a total way of life.  My aunt was a barbershopper and my grandfather, while he didn’t sing, was a HUGE fan of barbershop and took me to my first show at age 7.

I sing in a Sweet Adeline Chorus called The Scioto Valley Chorus.  I sing the baritone part in the chorus and have also been known to sing lead and tenor.   I also am on the visual team for D’s chorus (see below).

The Drama Queen has recently joined my chorus, which was no big surprise to anyone.  She has been attending rehearsals with me in some fashion or another since she was two.

D directs a Barbershop Harmony Society chorus called The Alliance (or The Alliance Of Greater Central Ohio.  Or TAGCO.).  He also currently sings in a quartet called The Allies. They most recently finished in the top 10 at the BHS international competition.  He formerly sang with a quartet called Uptown Sound, which finished as high as 2nd in the international competition.

J will someday sing we are sure.   Right now he is content to try and learn the choreography at D’s chorus rehearsals, try and direct D’s chorus when he is allowed, and sing along while I play Guitar Hero.  The kid is a ham through and through.  He will either be an entertainer or a politician.  It’s too early to tell.

One Response to “Barbershop”

  1. Hi Kim,
This is so cool…I was linked to your blog because of the Barbershop! In reading some of your entries I see we actually have a lot in common…I am also a baritone…I have a freshman in high school, and as seen in your most current post you graduated somewhere around 1988…as did I! I do believe we are on opposite sides of the U.S. though…Nice to meet you! I enjoyed reading some of your writings…
